Meditation and Stress Reduction Techniques

Meditation is the natural process of withdrawing attention from the outside world, the body and the mind and turning attention inward.  Many find meditation difficult because the mind is like a child being ignored, it wants be the center of attention.  It reminds us that we wouldn’t be here without the mind which allowed us to move from humble tree dwellers to the most powerful beings on the planet.  The mind doesn’t want to let go so easily.  It wants us to be ever vigilant.  It doesn’t want us to evolve.  It’s a little bit like sibling rivalry, the mind doesn’t want us to get to know our soul, it fears it will lose its status in the family.

Guided visualizations are like engaging babysitters, they are effective in helping us to move beyond the chatter of our mind; by keeping the mind occupied with soothing images and sounds as we allow ourselves the space and silence to move to a deeper healing place within.

Many patients, residents and healthcare workers ask me if this is hypnosis, perhaps but in a positive way. Eventually you can learn to meditate without a guided visualization.  The visualization is just an aid, we start this journey and before long the mind is quieted so that one can get to know our more expansive unbounded self which is beyond time space and the physical.

From a physiological standpoint Meditation is like deep sleep and helps the body replace hormones and improve immune system functioning.  It also helps us overcome fear and more readily embrace change.

Sitting in a Chair Upright Posture Head Neck and Shoulders Straight or Surrender Posture Lying on the Floor

LAY ON THE FLOOR WITH PALMS FACING UPWARD OR IN THE CHAIR WITH THEIR HANDS FACING UPWARD.  NOW I’D LIKE YOU TO TAKE A DEEP BREATH IN FOR 3 SECONDS OUT FOR 6 AND IMAGINE THAT WITH EACH BREATH YOU ARE SINKING DEEPER INTO THE FLOOR/CHAIR.  NOW WITH EACH INHALATION IMAGINE YOU ARE BREATHING UP ENERGY FROM THE EARTH AND LET GO OF WHAT YOU DON’T NEED BACK INTO THE EARTH. THE UNIVERSE CAN HANDLE IT, REMEMEBER THE EARTH AND UNIVERSE HAVE TREMENDOUS PROBLEM SOLVING ABILITY WHICH AFTER 14 BILLION YEARS OF EVOLUTION HAS ALLOWED US TO COMPREHEND THIS AMAZING FEAT.  TAP INTO THAT FIELD OF COLLECTIVE SUBCONSCIOUSNESS THE INTELLIGENCE THAT CHANGES SEASONS, PROVIDES FOOD FOR OUR NEEDS.  PERHAPS WE JUST NEED TO QUIET THE BUSY THINKING MIND AND SURRENDER TO THE COSMIC MIND.  DON’T OBSSESS ABOUT YOUR PROBLEMS SURRENDER THEM AND SEE WHAT ANSWERS YOU GET BETWEEN THE THOUGHTS.  SENSE THE OPENESS AND SPACE WHEN YOU DON’T GET ATTACHED TO YOUR THOUGHTS AND SENSES.  USE THIS EXERCISE BEFORE BED AND WHEN YOU WAKE UP YOU MIGHT BE SURPRISED THAT THE UNIVERSE HAS ORGANIZED A SOLUTION FOR YOU. WITH EACH INHALATION BREATH IN THE ENERGY OF THE UNIVERSE AND WITH EACH EXHALATION LET GO OF YOUR PROBLEMS AND WORRIES.

IF THOUGHTS COME TO YOU DURING THE MEDITATION DON’T FIGHT THEM.  THANK THE CHILD FOR BRINGING THINGS TO OUR ATTENTION.  HUMOR THE CHILD AND LET THE CHILD KNOW YOU LOVE THEM AND WILL GET BACK TO THEM SHORTLY.  THE THINKING MIND THAT HAS PROTECTED US FROM PREDATORS AND HELPED TO SURVIVE A JOURNEY OF MILLIONS OF YEARS DOES NOT GIVE UP EASILY.  IT WANTS US TO BE VIGILANT.  WE CAN EITHER EVOLVE TO BECOME A MASTER OF OURSELVES OR FOREVER STAY A PRISONER OF THE PAST FEAR BASED SELF.

PRACTICE A THREE SECOND INHALATION AND SIX SECOND EXHALATION FOCUSING ON BRINGING POSITIVE ENERGY INTO YOUR BEING AND RELEASING ALL NEGATIVITY FEAR AND WORRY INTO THE EARTH. CONTINUE FOR A FEW MINUTES OR GO DIRECTLY INTO THE STREAM MEDITATION.

Stress Reduction Becoming a Master of Yourself

Have you ever been driving along minding your own business when someone starts to tailgate you and act aggressive?  Our normal response is to get upset, honk the horn, curse, but aren’t we allowing this other person, who we don’t even know, power to control our autoimmune system.  Our stress response was designed to help us survive we fight or flight but in today’s modern world we trigger this response in less than life and death situations.  The constant trigger of stress wears on our immune system.

There is a way to become a master of oneself instead a prisoner of one’s emotions.  It involves deep breathing in for three seconds and out for six.  Ask yourself the next time a stressful situation arises; Is this life or death.  If yes let your hormones loose fight or flight.   But if it is not put your hands on your belly and practice the breathing technique for a few minutes you’ll be amazed at how simple this can be.

You can also practice the breathing in bed if you have problems falling asleep.
